Reading a Picture Book Aloud to a Child Lights Up Their Brain!
Picture books are great summer reads for so many reasons. They give you a chance to have some quiet time with your kids, they are generally short and can be finished in one sitting, and they mix up the normal independent reading time helping keep your kids engaged in reading. We know reading to your child is one of the most important things you can do for brain development, but a recent study I read stated how important picture books are for kids. It took a group of kids who were just about ready to start school and had them do three different reading activities while they watched scans of the children’s brains. The study showed how just being read to without seeing pictures only lit up one part of the child’s brain, then they had the children listen to a picture book being read aloud and were able to see multiple areas of the brain be engaged and light up, the final activity was watching an animated story read aloud with the words displayed this activity only had sporadic areas of the brain light up, almost like it was overloaded. I found this to be very interesting and it reminded me how important it is to continue reading picture books with my children even as they grow older. You can find the short article summarizing the study linked below.
Are you looking for some great picture books? One of my favorites that was published earlier this year is Malala’s Magic Pencil, it has beautiful illustrations and helps share Malala Yousafzai’s amazing story.
For more picture books here is an article I found that has a great list to explore.

The leader is very fierce. The book has a lot of fights with badgers. Leafpool and Squirrelflight are very strong and healthy cats. They go a missions to find who killed a kitten or a member of their clan. Now if you are wondering what a clan is, it is a big and I mean big group of cats.
