Students please bring your minutes in by September 9 for your prizes.  Also think about snapping some pictures of your NFL reading and math, Mrs. Staley will post your pictures in our Media Center. targetimages

Target Gives

Please use the link below to vote for Pinewood.  Every vote is a dollar that Target donates to our school.  Last year we were able to purchase many books with our over 300 votes, this year we hope to beat that amount, please help us vote and share with family and friends to vote.

A Note From Pinewood Parent Club

Back to school sales are in full swing, summer is beginning to wind down, and the new Pinewood Parents Club Board members are busy planning an exciting year of activities for Pinewood students and families! We are looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones at the Open House on August 28. In the meantime, here’s a little preview of what we’ve been working on this summer:

Awesome Activities for Pinewood Students and Families

We will be continuing popular activities like Donuts with Dad and Muffins with Mom, and we will be including the Kindergarten social to include first grade students and parents as well. We are also hoping to try some new activities and bring back some old favorites: we’ll have fun family events to keep your kids busy and screen-free during Health Week this fall, and we are hoping to bring back a carnival-style fun night in May. We want your feedback on ideas like expanding Science Night and holding a Daddy-Daughter Dance. And if there’s an activity you want to see happening at Pinewood and you’re willing to volunteer to help make it happen, we would love for you to get involved with Parents Club this fall!

Fantastic Fundraisers to Support Pinewood Teachers and Staff

Did you know that last year Pinewood Parents Club raised $10,330? And almost all of that money goes right back to teachers and staff members!  PPC fundraisers provide start up funds for teachers to equip their classrooms in the fall. PPC fundraisers offer teachers and librarians the opportunity to expand popular book collections and replace worn out copies of books. Sixth grade camp, Weekly Readers, WWII models, rewards for the safeties who keep our kids safe crossing streets before and after school: PPC fundraisers help make these opportunities possible for Pinewood students and teachers.

This year, we will kick off fall fundraising with the Walkthon. We want every Pinewood student to participate! The amount of money raised from the Walkathon will determine whether we need to follow up with a second fundraiser in the Spring.

Fun, Low Key Ways for Parents to Get Involved with PPC

We want to make this a great year for Pinewood students, families, teachers, and staff. But we need your help! Come out to a PPC meeting. Like us on Facebook. Sign up to volunteer at an event. Help us provide meals and snacks for teachers during conferences, or send in classroom supplies during Teacher Appreciation Week. If you own or work for a business that could help us sponsor an event or provide donations, connect with us to share those resources! You don’t need to commit to every meeting or every activity: get involved at a level that works for you, and we promise you’ll meet other fun, interesting Pinewood parents who care about our kids and our school!

We look forward to seeing all of you at Open House on August 28! Look for us on the playground under the shelter! We will have Pinewood apparel order forms, a volunteer sign up sheet to find out more about Parents Club, and a calendar of fall events!

Creating Variety in Your Reading

Pinewood staff learning more about literacy

Pinewood staff learning more about literacy

What are Jenison Elementary teachers doing today?  All JPS elementary teachers including Pinewood staff are learning more about literacy today.  Literacy is reading, writing, and speaking.  All students who have been participating in NFL learning this summer have been working on their literacy skills.  How can you keep improving on those skills without getting board with your reading?  This week for your NFL learning think about trying something new.  Read informational text instead of fiction.  What is informational text?  Its non-fiction, or writing that is based on facts and reality.

What are some ideas for informational text?  Read a recipe and make a a meal or snack with your family.  Read an article from a magazine or newspaper and talk about it with a friend or family member.  Find something your interested in and search for a how to video then try it, talk about it, and write about it.  If you have been practicing soccer, trying to teach your pet a trick, creating a cool decoration for your room.  With your parent you can search for a how to video or guide online and then give it a try.

If you try a recipe or find a something interesting share it with me and I will post it on the blog, if you like it lots of other students will too.
